Common Questions

Questions patients
usually ask.

Do I need a GP referral to book?
No referral is needed. You can book directly via Halaxy — no GP visit required beforehand. GP-referred patients are also welcome.
What happens at my first visit?
Your Varicose Vein Check includes a medical history review, physical examination, and a brief ultrasound scan (POCUS). Most patients are then referred for a formal duplex ultrasound — a separate appointment with its own cost. We'll explain your findings clearly and outline your options.
Is treatment painful?
Most patients find treatment well tolerated. Sclerotherapy involves fine injections with minimal discomfort. Radiofrequency ablation is performed under local anaesthetic, so most patients find the procedure comfortable. Mild aching or bruising afterwards is common and usually settles within a few days.
Does Medicare cover vein treatment?
Medicare rebates may apply to your consultation and eligible treatment procedures. A formal duplex ultrasound, if required, is arranged as a separate referral with its own cost. Your out-of-pocket costs will be clearly explained before any treatment begins. Private health insurance may also contribute to eligible in-clinic procedures.
How long does treatment take?
Sclerotherapy sessions typically take 30–60 minutes. Radiofrequency ablation usually takes 30–45 minutes. You walk out of the clinic and can return to normal activities the same day.
Will my veins come back after treatment?
Treated veins are typically closed for good, though new veins can develop over time — particularly with prolonged standing, a strong family history, or after pregnancy. Early follow-up reviews are scheduled at 4 weeks and 3–6 months, and we recommend ongoing yearly reviews after that to catch any new varicose veins early.
What's the difference between sclerotherapy and radiofrequency ablation?
Sclerotherapy uses a fine needle injection to collapse smaller veins — spider veins, reticular veins, and smaller varicosities. Radiofrequency ablation uses controlled heat delivered via a thin catheter to close larger, deeper saphenous veins that are the underlying cause of most significant varicose veins. Many patients benefit from both, used in sequence.
Can I drive myself home after treatment?
Yes, for most procedures. In-clinic treatments at Illawarra Vein Clinic are performed under local anaesthetic only — no sedation is required, so you can drive yourself home and return to normal activities the same day. If your treatment is performed at the Day-Surgery Hospital, you will need someone to drive you home.
Is there off-street parking?
Yes. Off-street parking is available at the corner of Khan Lane and Denison Street — Crown West Medical is behind Convenient Chemist, with a back entry from Khan Lane.
Do you offer concession pricing?
Yes. Concession pricing is available for aged pensioners and healthcare card holders. Please mention this when booking.
